My Portrait lenses

My first portrait lens was an Olympus Zuiko 135mm F2.8 that I used in my trusty Olympus OM1 ages ago. That was a perfect focal length for shots that I made during interviews for the newspaper I used to work, very compact, sharp and produced a nice bokeh that isolated the subject nicely.

When I moved to Sony I got the 90mm Macro as a dual lens, macro and portraits. It was the only prime as an option for native FE mount. This lens is fantastic, very sharp but sometimes I had a bit of problems focusing with the A7. The Sony 85mm GM came in but I wanted a longer focal length, yes, I'm a 135mm guy!

​So, I got the FE 70-200G F4 which is a great zoom lens but I still had the idea of getting a 135mm prime but which one? 

Of course I got an Olympus similar to what I used plus an old Canon FD 135mm F3.5, both manual lenses with cheap mechanical adapters that produced very nice results, although my cameras looked a bit funny.

Later on, I did a shoot with gorgeous Nataliia with the A7 and Zuiko 135mm with great results

Until I spent a week with a modern Zeiss 135mm F2 attached to my A7 that blew my mind. After that I started to tweet to Zeiss #Releasethe135mm asking for a Batis or Loxia with native FE Mount

Eventually Zeiss released the Batis 135mm F2.8 that for some reason it took months to arrive to Australia. Sigma also launched the Art 135mm F1.8 in EF Mount that would work on my Sony A7 with the MC-11. This Sigma made its way to Australia pretty quick and it was half the price of the Zeiss but double the weight. I tested the Sony 100mm STF GM, fantastic lens but it got lost in its way Down Under. At the end of the day the Sigma arrived like 2 or 3 months before to the Batis and STF and it came home where it has proven to be an incredible sharp lens rivalling the best lenses out there.

This photo of beautiful Lily was shot with the A7II and the Sigma 135mm Art at F1.8 hence the shallow depth of field.

Regardless how good is the Sigma Art 135mm, it is bulky and heavy, therefore not the best choice for travelling. After reading several reviews and posts in forums, I decided to get the new Sony FE 85mm F1.8. I was greatly surprised how good it is, very light and sharp, nice bokeh and contrast and perfect size for my small travel bag. I might not be a 85mm shooter but this lens changed my mind and now I can say that I did a whole photoshoot with gorgeous Megan using only this lens, the image below is from that shoot. I highly recommend this FE 85mm.

I hope Sony may offer either a G or GM 135mm F1.8 in the near future. I look forward to it.
